About one and a half hour’s drive from Bagan is the town of Salay, a colorful old religious center in central Myanmar, on the eastern bank of Ayeyarwady River, hometown of Myanmar’s famous 19th Century poet and play-writer U Ponnya, who is often likened to William Shakespere. This town is famous for its numerous ancient monasteries adorned with spectacular woodcarvings, the most famous of them is “Yoke-Sone-Kyaung”, a monastery built with pure teak-wood and that boasts magnificent carvings of traditional motifs, and houses a Poet U Ponnya Museum and an antique lacquer-ware exhibition.
